FOOT PAIN

Investigating and treating the cause of all types of foot pain with Biomechanics

GENERAL FOOT CARE

Debridement of nails and calluses

CALLUSES

A callus is an area of thickened skin. The most common place a painful callus is found is under the forefoot. Calluses are usually formed in response to one or more metatarsal bones that have an increased angle of declination. This increased angle causes an area of the foot to strike the ground prematurely, resulting in greater weight on an area of the foot the body is not designed to handle. The body, in an effort to protect itself, thickens the skin.

INGROWN TOENAILS

Ingrown toenails can be caused by improper nail trimming, tight shoes, or a bony spur underneath the nail (visible by the nail curving and digging into the surrounding skin). In each case the body reacts to the nail as a foreign object, as it would a splinter, resulting in swelling, redness, heat, and pain. If left untreated the skin may become thickened and overlap the nail forming a pyogenic granuloma. The first step treating an ingrown toenail is removing the part of the nail sticking into the skin and treating any infection.

CORNS

Corns can be soft or hard, and are almost always painful. Corns can be found on the top of toes, the side of toes, and even in-between toes. Corns are caused by a bony prominence, a contracted joint, or two bones rubbing together, and can result in ulcers which are almost impossible to heal, without treating the cause of the corn.

CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT

The feet contain approximately a quarter of all the bones in the body. With that many bones working together, it should come as no surprise that problems can develop. Dr. Biehler uses patented orthotics,  custom made inserts that can be placed into shoes to either accommodate and cushion excessive pressure in the foot or can be made to functionally correct and align the foot.
